Not So Church Fine Arts Tour

Not So Church Fine Arts Tour

One of the things that inspired me were video games and their use of sound. Many video games such as Call of Duty uses sound to create a world where the user can tell whether something is to the left or right of a person or if it was far away or close by. One of the things that inspired me was the Oculus Rift and the ability to make a player first person in virtual reality. I was inspired by the idea to put someone in a virtual world with just the use of sound. In a sense, making the user feel like as if the real world is the virtual world. One of the games that I was inspired for this audio was a game for the Oculus Rift called Lost in the Rift. The game is a first person horror game where you have to find a girl. The game ends up taking you to a tunnel where you travel deeper and deeper in maze like hallways as you try to find her. The game uses sounds such as ominous winds blowing and creaking doors that create a creepy vibe that makes you tense up as you force yourself to make another step. It also uses sounds of the character's loud breathing and staggered steps to heighten the tension of the game. I wanted to create that same creepy vibe and incorporate it into a tour. I used the sounds of the game as a reference for my audio to create that same kind of tension and vibe the game provides as you follow the ghostly tour guide around the Church Fine Arts Building making the listener the main character in this real life virtual tour.

  1. One of the things that I’m still shaken up over is the environment you were able to develop through audio. Both the script and its articulation were chilling, whereas the sounds you incorporated filled the voids seamlessly. What I really appreciated about the work is although you provided concise directions, a participant still has the ability to pave their own path (if they’re not following along at the same pace), which worked in the selected location and it’s numerous corridors one may encounter.

  2. I had so much fun running around CFA on your tour!! The narration was spot-on and it made me so nervous. We had to really book it down some hallways in order to keep up with the directions, which only added to the whole atmosphere of the piece. Really excellent job! It'd be super sweet/terrifying to run the tour with flashlights and then have all the lights turned off!

    Thanks!

  3. Very creepy and, I think, one of the best uses of sound. I wish we had been the only people in the building, but was still a cool run through the CFA.

  4. This was really neat because I have been in the building so much and had no idea some of the places you took us to existed. This was another piece where the natural sound really blended with the produced noise, i.e. footsteps, voices, etc. Great job making something scary - that is tough to do!

  5. I agree with all the above comments. This was very creepy and super smart. Emma and I started later than the rest of the group, so we had to follow your directions instead of trusting the class to lead us. We never got lost which says a lot about your clear directions. Great use of space and a unique look at a building we all thought we knew pretty well. Good job!

  6. This was a very impressive piece! I couldn't believe how realistic you made the scary parts were and how you actually evoked a sense of fear in almost all of us. I would have to have done this with only a small group of people, and all or most of the lights off!

  7. This was very creative and fun, like making a haunted house out of an ordinary space. It had a great narrative that moved us along, scared as more, and then turned on us. I honestly felt like this would be a great way to actually tour a group through an equally visually scary haunted house. Maybe use as a suggestion to Lincoln haunted house next year?

  8. This was scary, you had great use of sound for this. Lots of fun too, running around the school into places I didn't know existed with such scary sounds was definitely one of the highlights of my day, good job Jenie!

  9. I love the horror genre, so this piece was one of my favorites. I love how it started out like a normal tour, but then you hear the footsteps and then you get the feeling that something went wrong. Honestly, if I wasn't in a group with other people and was alone listening to this piece late at night when the CFA was closed, I would be frightened of my environment and wouldn't know where to go or how to react. The sound of ominous footsteps and the narrator who you didn't know whether to trust or not, but you did anyway- it all worked together well. If there was one thing I could criticize, it is this: during the part where we were hiding by the lockers in the bottom floor, the narrator was talking about a backpack. Understandably this wasn't as important as the actual audio, but it would have added more to the scare factor if there was a backpack actually there waiting for us, just as the narrator described it. I think it would have made it even more scary, but I still loved your tour over all.

  10. This piece successfully created a creepy atmosphere. The sound effects made the places in CFA horrible. The run behavior was a cool part of the piece.

  11. This was a you know you you know the feeling you get at the beginning of horror movies where you yell at the main characters not to go in the creepy building in the first place? That's the feeling I got when the atmosphere of the audio changed. Should've turned back. However, I enjoyed the adventure and the slim escape.

  12. Absolutely terrifying! This piece had my heart racing the entire time while simultaneously questioning what was going on and why it was happening. Very well written and thought out.

  13. This piece was amazing, definitely my favorite. I was honestly scared, and it was a perfect location for such a scary voice. I didnt even know some of those places existed which made it even creepier.
